All I Ask 03:46
It’s late at night I try to fight but I can not sleep It’s dark, can’t see But I hear you breathing right next to me My head replays Each mistake I wish I never made Sleep, peaceful sleep, it’s all I ask, all I ask Please, just one night, it’s all I ask, all I ask It’s cold outside Got to make it through these winter nights My ghosts come out Dancing around they won’t let me be I pace the floor And I can’t believe it’s only five past three A brand new day I’ll try to scare these ghosts away A brand new day Is worth the wait It’s late at night I toss and turn but I can not sleep

Now or Never 03:32
She wakes up At the crack of dawn Sees the sunrise Through the fog Makes her way Down the road Towards a light That’s changing red She said “I need to run away, find something better This old town can’t hold me down forever. I want to be someone people remember I want to stand out from the crowd” She puts on her uniform Tries to smile while she counts your change You can tell She’s far away While she dreams of a different life She said “I need to run away, find something better This old town can’t hold me down forever. I want to be someone people remember I want to stand out from the crowd” She doesn’t know what she is after But that doesn’t seem to bother her, no. She thinks it’s now or never To start something new, something new.

Met a man named Hazel Motes Back at a roadside bar Selling bibles from his trunk and moonshine from a jar He said the spirit burns within A fire deep inside He bragged about his great past I’m pretty sure he lied He had a way of looking wild And in a little trouble with the law You knew that it was coming soon The day that he would take his fall He drove the car all night long But he couldn’t hide He said that he would change himself But I don’t think he tried I guess that’s how it goes I guess that’s how the story goes Many years came and went on by That’s the little funny thing about time I heard that Hazel had gone blind From a mutual friend of mine He said he knew it in his blood He didn’t need to see I couldn’t tell if it was just a scam Or an honest plea I guess that’s how it moves I guess that’s how the spirit moves I saw him right before his end He finally cut the chain He whispered to me “Grace is change And change is pain”. I guess that’s how it ends I guess that’s how the story ends

Deal With It 02:16
Nice guy says “hi” There doesn’t need to be a reason why Just let him be Take the compliments he gives for free You think he’s a flirt So you drag his name through the dirt You’re insecure so deal with it Don’t bring me down, don’t bring me down, don’t bring me down Just deal with it That’s your problem deal with it Don’t make it mine, don’t make it mine, don’t make it mine Just deal with it His words are kind You just twist them up inside of your mind He’s wrong you say And you’re gonna have to make him pay You think it’s true That world revolves around you That’s just your ego deal with it Don’t bring me down Just deal with it That’s your problem deal with it Don’t make it mine Just deal with it Don’t fix what’s not broken You’re insecure so deal with it Don’t bring me down Just deal with it That’s your problem deal with it Don’t make it mine Just deal with it That’s just your ego deal with it Don’t bring me down Just deal with it

Airplane leaving first thing tomorrow “Sure thing”, he said he’ll take her there Sharp pain, all mixed up with sorrow He wonders if he’ll see her again. One way coach ticket to Paris He walks her to security He tries to act as if he could care less He wonders if he’ll see her again. It might not be for years It might not be forever Postcard of half naked statue Flips it over reads a note to him: “Food’s great, and so is the fashion” He wonders if he’ll see her again. Did she need to be free? Did she need to go? I remember her smiling Smiling at me Why did she leave? He keeps up, sees her pictures on twitter Looks like she’s having quite a time Seasons change, his memory is fading He thinks he’ll never see her again It might not be for years It might not be forever So say your goodbyes.

Another Day 03:34
Police man knocks He’s been asking Where have you been? Unchecked Your mail piles up Where have you been? A week went by We finally found you In a hospital room down town The cancer came on Swift and strong But you’ve been through wars before Take a look out your window It’s another day The sun’s crescendo It’s another day I know I know it’s painful I know it hurts So much Is quickly changing All for the worse I feel so helpless Don’t know what to say So I’ll look out the window For another day

It’s a sticky situation I see that I’m just a piece in the game All the white pawns surround me Everything moves but stays the same The castle is in his corner The queen’s shifting in and out of the frame I don’t want to cause no problems I don’t want to be the one that complains There’s just one thing on my mind But maybe it’ll go away I think there might have been a mistake A little thing that eats away at my soul I thought it was a cut and dry case But now it’s taking more and more of a toll I swear that I think I’m climbing But I keep sinking into this hole I wish I didn’t have these problems I wish I didn’t have to be on the dole There’s a pain deep in my side But maybe it’ll go away I look around for the answers (But) everyone says I should be fine I think I might be going crazy Chasing a tail that could be mine I try to trust intuition I see a curve when I should be seeing a line I need to move past my problems I need to move past the block in my mind A stabbing ache that makes me blind But maybe it’ll go away.

The lights are out and no one’s home There’s no one fighting through the night There’s just a shell dried on the shore It’s just the calm before the storm I see the clouds forming We’re in for nasty weather It’s headed right this way Despite our great intentions You know as well as I do We see it yet we stay It wasn’t always like today When he moved in, the ring in hand He was on his knee dreaming big But the bottle was too strong and won the war It’s too late to turn back now What’s done is done, it’s time to move on The morning sky is blazing red

Roses 03:28
You tried so hard You fought in every battle You mend your wounds You mend his too. When will your roses bloom? You planted seeds so long ago When will your roses bloom? When will your roses bloom? You tried to be fair He saw that as your weakness You didn’t stand a chance You waved your white flag You cried so hard But he would only mock you When you signed your name Your family split in two When will your roses bloom? You planted seeds so long ago When will your roses bloom? You've waited so long

I Love You 03:02
Sun’s going down I’m alone but I’m thinking of you While the sky turns a darker blue Tonight Crossword unfinished It’s not the same when you’re not around The solution just can’t be found Tonight I love you Do you remember That you cried when you cooked for me Cause you wanted everything to be Just right Well now you know That each teardrop touched me through Cause I feel the same for you That’s right I rest my head There’s a space that I’ve saved for you Until the sky turns a lighter blue Tonight I close my eyes In a dream I see you smile While you walk to me down the aisle That’s right I love you

I think it was the coldest day of the year Grandma’s in the kitchen, she’s been cooking all day The smell comes in waves and waves and waves, I can hardly wait Setting the table, passing the plates Polishing the silver forks and knives till you see your face I think it was the coldest day of the year A cloudy sky, snow and ice outside You started a fire using the embers from yesterday A glowing light spreading warmth inside Here comes the family inside from the snow Look at your youngest daughter now, see how she grows I think that next year we’ll need to get a bigger table Please help your mother take her seat, you know where she goes I think it was the darkest day of the year Noon and night seemed the same outside The warmth from your fire built with the embers from yesterday The perfect way to spend a day inside Let’s take a moment to think of the friends that can’t be here Let’s all be thankful for the love that we have

Today’s your birthday and I’m thinking of you Though there is a sea that spans between us A vast and empty space that goes for miles There’s a memory that I can lean on And in that place I see you close to me. Today’s your birthday and I’m thinking of you

Joshua Starmer Chapel Hill, North Carolina

A native of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Joshua Starmer is a cellist, composer, and singer whose eclectic sound recalls the string-led pop of Andrew Bird and the quirky compositions of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, both of whom he cites as influences. A cellist since the age of seven, Starmer eventually wove himself into the fabric of North Carolina's vibrant music scene. ~ Timothy Monger ... more
